Pitching Dominates in Baseball Win Over Wofford

Rams Hold Terriers to Just Three Hits and Strike Out 14 in 2-1 Victory

Spartansburg, S.C. – (February 17, 2018) – Behind a stellar effort from the Fordham pitching trio of Ben Greenberg, Matt Mikulski, and Alvin Melendez, the Rams earned their first win of the 2018 season with a 2-1 victory over the Wofford Terriers at Russell C. King Field in Spartansburg, S.C.

With the win, Fordham evens its record at 1-1 on the year, while Wofford fell to 0-2.

Fordham got out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning against the Terriers.  Billy Godrick led off the game with a solo home run to left center, his second of the season.  Jake Baker then singled to left center and moved to third on a one-out double by Matt Tarabek.  Baker then scored on a ground out by Brian Goulard.

Ben Greenberg then took the hill for the first time for the Rams since May of 2016.  He would walk the bases loaded but got an inning-ending 4-6-3 double play ball to end the scoring threat.  Greenberg would go three-plus innings without allowing a hit with four walks and four strikeouts.

Matt Mikulski came in from the bullpen and made an immediate impact for the Rams, striking out two in the fourth and striking out the side in the fifth, as the Terriers were still in search of their first hit.

Wofford would final crack the hit column in the sixth, as McClain Bradley singled to left center, and later broke up the shutout, scoring on a double down the left field line by Mack Nathanson.

In the seventh, Wofford threatened to tie the game, as Mikulski walked Alex Malsch with two outs ending the freshman's debut with seven strikeouts over 3.2 innings of relief.  Alvin Melendez came in from right field to relief Mikulski and got a fly out to end the inning.

Then in the eighth, the Terriers again would threaten with runners at second and third with one out, but Melendez would snag a comebacker to get a fielder's choice out at the plate and then get a ground out to third to end the inning.

Melendez then finished with a pair of strikeouts in the ninth to close out the 2-1 victory for the Rams.

Mikulski (1-0) earned the win, allowing one run on two hits over 3.2 innings of work with seven strikeouts, while Melendez recorded the save, giving up just one hit over 2.1 innings with three strikeouts.

The Rams are next in action on Sunday at 3:00 PM, when they play at USC Upstate.
