Cross Country Hosts the 2008 Metropolitan Championships
Oct. 10, 2008 Bronx, N.Y. - The 2008 Metropolitan Cross Country Championships were held at Van Cortlandt Park this afternoon, as Columbia University won both the men and women's competitions. Host Fordham placed fourth of nine teams in the men's competition, while the women were sixth of nine teams. In the women's competition, Columbia won a tight meet with 68 points, followed by Rutgers (74), Iona (83), St. John's (100), Manhattan (111), Fordham (157), Wagner (191), Hofstra (245), and Stony Brook (263). Rutgers' Cheyenne Ogletree won the individual race in a time of 18:10 over the 5K course, followed by Iona's Ashling Baker (18:14). For Fordham, Brigid Moriarty was the top finisher, taking ninth in 19:15, followed by Kerri Gallagher in 18th place (19:52). Susanne Hansen (20:28) and Jacqueline Prevete (20:30) finished in 40th and 41st overall, respectively, with Mairin O'Connor taking 53rd overall (21:02). In the men's competition, Columbia won with a score of 22, followed by NYU (41), Rutgers (86), Fordham (116), Manhattan (172), Seton Hall (184), Wagner (187), Hofstra (223), and Stony Brook (239). Columbia had the top three finishers on the day, led by Bobby Hartnett, who finished first in 25:39.1. For Fordham, Clifton Hilario was the Rams' top finisher in 11th place in 26:31.0, while Brian Riley was right behind him in 12th (26:32.0). Tim Hartnett took 26th overall in 27:04.9 with Paul Szczepaniak (41st - 27:38.1) and Casey Barrett (43rd - 27:43.1), rounding out the scoring for the Rams.
