Women's Tennis Falls at UMass, 6-1

Amherst, Mass. - The Fordham University women's tennis team opened its weekend with a match against the University of Massachusetts, falling to the Minutewomen, 6-1, at the Bay Road Tennis Center. The Rams opened play by dropping the doubles point, losing all three doubles matches. Sarah Ali and Amy Simidian were edged at first doubles by Yuliana Motyl and Chantel Swiszcz, 8-7, while Bella Genkina and Anika Novacek were upended by Jessica Podlofsky and Arielle Griffin, 8-2, at second doubles and Angelika Dabu and Julie Leong fell to Sonia Bokhari and Chanel Glasper, 8-3, at the third position. Ali picked up the Fordham point in singles play, defeating Bokhari in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0. The Rams had chances to pick up points at three other singles spots but Fordham players fell in the third set or tiebreaker in each. Dabu lost the first set at third singles to Griffin, 6-4, before coming back to take the second, 6-3, but lost the third, 6-1. At fifth singles, Leong was bested by Glasper in the first set, 6-2, before winning the second, 7-6. But Glasper came back to take the tiebreaker, 10-4. Novacek almost picked up a point for the Rams at sixth singles, dropping the first set to Swiszcz, 7-6, before winning the second, 6-3. But Swiszcz came back to win the tiebreaker, 10-7. The Rams return to action on Sunday, March 3, as they continue their weekend of action at Saint Joseph's at noon.
