Women's Soccer Falls To Richmond
Oct. 7, 2012
Richmond, Va. - The Fordham women's soccer team looked to quickly put their last match against VCU in the rear view mirror, as the Rams took on the Richmond Spiders on Sunday. Fordham was aggressive from the start, but an unfortunate bounce on a Richmond shot put the ball into the net, giving Richmond a 1-0 win.
With the loss, Fordham falls to 6-8-0 overall, 2-2 in the Atlantic 10, while Richmond improved to 6-7-0 on the year, 2-2 in the league.
Fordham controlled the early stages of the game, as the Rams forced Richmond goalkeeper Andrea Young to make four saves over the first 20 minutes of the contest.
The defenses held up strongly, accounting for a number of blocked shots and a scoreless first half.
The Rams continue to press in the second half as Annie Worden almost gave the Rams the lead in the 71st minute. Worden would put a shot off the post and then had her rebound shot blocked, keeping the game without a goal.
The game would come down to one bad bounce in the 83rd minute. Richmond's Erin Layne had a shot blocked with Fordham trying to clear on a header. The ball though bounced the wrong way and into the net for an own goal.
The Rams desperately tried to find the equalizer in the final seven minutes, but shots by Worden and Kaitlin Abrams were both stopped by Young to preserve the 1-0 victory.
The Fordham women's soccer team will next be in action on Friday, October 12th, when the Rams host the Charlotte 49ers at Jack Coffey Field, beginning at 7:00 PM.
