Rowing Places Seventh at Atlantic 10 Championship

Pennsauken, N.J. - The Fordham University rowing team participated in the 2012 Atlantic 10 Championships today on the Cooper River where the Rams placed seventh of nine teams. The top two Fordham finishers in the scoring races were the varsity 8 and the second varsity 8, who each placed second in the petite final.

Rhode Island claimed its third Atlantic 10 Rowing Championship, posting first-place finishes in the Varsity 8, Second Varsity 8, Varsity 4B and Novice 8 to finish the regatta with 53 points. George Washington captured second place with 42 points thanks in part to a second place finish in the Varsity 8.

Massachusetts and Temple tied for third place overall with 37 points, while Dayton finished fifth (35). Rounding out this year's field was St. Joseph's in sixth (13 points), Fordham in seventh (13), and Duquesne and La Salle tied for eighth with 11 points

The championship started with the varsity 8 heats with the Rams placing fourth in their heat in a time of 7:26.03, behind Rhode Island, Temple and Dayton but in front of La Salle. The Fordham varsity 8 was comprised of Ashleigh Aitchison, Alexandra McDonald, Elizabeth Helmer, Celine Egraz, Allie Fitzmoris, Katelyn Lakes, Maureen White, Nicole Arrato with Rachel Sortino at coxswain.

 

 

With the fourth place finish, the Fordham varsity 8 advanced to the petite final where the shell placed second in a time of 7:39.24, just four seconds behind La Salle and ahead of Duquesne.

In the second varsity 8, Fordham again placed fourth in its heat in a time of 7:51.10, behind Rhode Island, Dayton and Massachusetts but in front of La Salle. The Fordham second varsity 8 was comprised of Megan Sullivan, Sarah Tully, Sossi Megan, Tecla Di Francesco, Alixandre Azizi, MariaLuisa Capuano, Molly McLaughlin, Jenn Amoroso with Elizabeth Chen at coxswain.

In the second varsity 8 petite final, the Rams took second in 7:52.16, behind Duquesne and ahead of La Salle.

The other scoring event on the day was the varsity 4 where the Fordham boat of Erin Snow, Abigail Paparo, Cara McGonigle and Sarah Gonsier with Caitlin Sershon at coxswain, placed fourth in its heat in a time of 9:05.13 and then won the petite final in 8:59.40, well ahead of Duquesne.

In other races, the Fordham novice 4 of Angelika Stamos, Maddie Bokan, Jillian Stackman, Emily Horihan and Sortino at coxswain took fifth while the varsity 4B of Natalie Perpepaj, Catherine Malone, Megan Feerick, Christina Moran and Christina Munteanu at coxswain placed sixth in 9:36.28.

The Rams will next be in action on May 11th and 12th when they compete in the Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia.
