Women's Basketball Falls To Manhattan In Annual Battle of the Bronx

Bronx, N.Y. - With the score tied at 44 with seven minutes left, the Manhattan Jaspers closed out the game with a 21-9 run, as the Jaspers topped the Fordham Rams, 65-53, at Draddy Gymnasium. With the loss, Fordham drops to 0-1, while Manhattan evens their record at 1-1.

Neither team got off to a blistering start, as the score was 9-9, 8:45 into the contest. Fordham then grabbed a 17-12 lead, following back-to-back three-pointers by Megan Mahoney and Beth Troutt. The Rams extended their lead on another three-pointer by Troutt, and eventually leading 24-16 with four minutes left in the half. Troutt hit another three-pointer to cap Fordham's scoring in the period, but Manhattan made a three-pointer just prior to half, to cut the Fordham lead to 29-25 at the half.

At the break, Fordham's Beth Troutt led all scorers with 11 points, while Megan Mahoney cashed in 10 points and five rebounds. Caitlin Flood led Manhattan with seven points and four rebounds.

Manhattan made a quick push to start the second half as Aubrie Dellinger and Annie McIntyre each hit a three-pointer to give the Jaspers a 34-33 lead, five minutes into the period. Vanessa Davison kept the Jaspers ahead with a basket and a three-point play, pushing their lead to 39-37. Fordham regained the lead on a three-pointer by Annie Zopf, but the game would eventually be knotted at 44 with 6:51 to play.

Then, Gabrielle Cottrell and Dellinger both hit a three-point basket, followed by two free throws by Cottrell, giving the Jaspers a 52-46 advantage with three minutes left. Manhattan extended that lead to 59-49, courtesy of five straight made free throws, with 55 seconds remaining, and held on for a 65-53 victory.

 

 

For Fordham, Megan Mahoney scored a team-high 14 points to go with eight rebounds and four assists, while Beth Troutt added 13 points and four boards. Kristina Bell also had eight points and a game-high 13 rebounds off the bench.

For Manhattan, Gabrielle Cottrell scored a game-high 18 points, included 9-of-10 from the free throw line, while Caitlin Flood and Aubrie Dellinger each had 13 points.

The Fordham women's basketball team will next be in action on Wednesday, November 14th, as they have their home opener against Marist College, beginning at 7:00 PM.
