March 2, 2012
Philadelphia, Pa. - The Fordham women's basketball team had already accomplished a lot in the 20011-12 season, a season they were trying to extend with a win over Saint Joseph's in the Atlantic 10 Championship. The Rams put up a fight before falling to the Hawks, 63-52, in the opening round of the tournament at Hagan Arena in Philadelphia.
Both teams came out firing, but not making, and it was Fordham got on the board first as Arielle Collins sliced through the lane for a layup to give the Rams a 2-0 lead just under three minutes into the game.
Saint Joseph's responded with a 13-2 run over the next 5:57 to give the Hawks a 13-4 lead as Ashley Prim and Michelle Baker scored all 13 points in the scoring outburst. The run was finally broken up by a pair of free throws from Charlotte Stoddart at 10:55.
With Saint Joseph's leading 16-6 at the 9:59 mark, Fordham used a 9-1 run to close to within two points, 17-15. During the run, Becky Peters netted four points, Emily Tapio scored three and Stoddart accounted for two.
Saint Joseph's used the last 6:21 of the half to push the lead back to 12, 34-22, as the Hawks outscored the Rams 17-7 over that stretch.
The Hawks opened the second half scoring the first five points to increase their lead to a game-high 16 points, 38-22, on a Michelle Baker layup at 17:21.
Fordham was unable to get the deficit back into single digits until Abigail Corning buried a three-pointer at 0:51, to make the score 59-50. The Rams could get no closer as Ashley Prim and Baker each made a pair of foul shots in the closing seconds to help Saint Joseph's seal the win.
Charlotte Stoddart recorded the second double-double of the season for the Rams as she finished with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Corning led Fordham with 17 points.
Fordham finished the 2011-12 season with a 12-18 overall record.
