Women's Basketball Taken Down By Richmond

Richmond, Va. - The Richmond Spiders had five players score in double figures as the Spiders topped the Fordham Rams, 80-64, at the Robins Center in Richmond, Va. With the loss, Fordham is now 0-22 on the year, 0-7 in the Atlantic 10, while Richmond improves to 10-11 overall, 3-3 in the conference. Richmond opened the game with a 12-3 lead four minutes in, as Kara Powell netted a pair of three-point baskets. Richmond extended the lead to double figures as Johanna McKnight hit a three-pointer to make it, 18-8, with 11:57 in the half. Richmond continued their hot shooting as Brittani Shells connected on back-to-back three-pointers, increasing the Spiders' lead to 42-23 in the period. At the half, Richmond took a 48-25 lead into the locker room, as they out rebounded Fordham, 35-12, in the period, which included 15 offensive rebounds. Brittani Shells led the Spiders with 12 points and five rebounds, while Fordham's Megan Mahoney had 15 points and three boards at the break. Things didn't get much better for Fordham at the start of the second half, as Richmond scored the first four baskets of the period and eventually led by 29, 59-30, with 15 minutes left in the second half. Fordham worked the game back under 20 points, as the Rams put together an 13-3 run near the end of the second half, highlighted by a three-pointer by Beth Troutt, her fourth of the game. Troutt connected on her season-high fifth of the game with 43.9 seconds left, as the Rams eventually fell by a 80-64 count. For Fordham, Megan Mahoney recorded Fordham's first double-double of the season as she scored 26 points and a season-high 11 rebounds, while Beth Troutt netted 15 points on five three-pointers. Annie Zopf also netted nine points and five assists.
Richmond was led by Brittani Shells' 12 points and eight rebounds, while Johanna McKnight, Christina Campion, Kara Powell, and Danielle Bell each had 10 points. The Fordham women's basketball team will next be in action on Wednesday, February 6th, as they host the University of Rhode Island for a special noon start time, as the Rams host Rams' School Day, where a number of Bronx school children will be in attendance at the game. |
