Dec. 1, 2012
Riverdale, N.Y. - The Fordham track & field team had a small portion of the squad open the 2012-13 season on Saturday at Draddy Gymnasium in Riverdale, consisting mainly of field event performers. Though it was a small squad, two Rams etched their name in the school record book.
The meet opened with the women's pole vault, where Fordham freshman Emma Cleary and graduate student Nicole Ragucci finished second and third respectively, as both tied the school record, with each clearing 10' 4", tying the 2009 mark of Maggie McGowan. Cleary took second as she cleared the height in fewer attempts.
Senior Courtnay Newman also had a solid performance posting two top five finishes. She took second in the high jump, clearing 5' 5", while registering a fifth place finish in the 60-meter hurdles in 9.5 seconds. Other top performers included sophomore Hailey Cox, who was sixth in the long jump (14' 10 ½") and seventh in the triple jump (32' 7"), and sophomore Lindsay Ritchie, who placed seventh in the shot put with a mark of 37' 3 ¼".
On the men's side, juniors Sean Collins and Sam Houston led the way for the Rams. Collins took second in the 60 meter hurdles in 8.5 seconds and fifth in the 300 meter dash in 37.1 seconds, while Houston was second in the long jump with a mark of 21' 10 ¼".
Other top performers included senior Daniel Clemens, who was fourth in the 60 meter hurdles (8.9), sophomore Austin Ruiz, who was fourth in the shot put (45' ½"), and senior Keegan Talty, who was sixth in the pole vault (13' 9 ¼").
The Rams will next be in action on Friday, December 7th, when the team hosts the Fordham Season Opener in the Lombardi Center Fieldhouse with the first event set for 2:00 PM.
