Men's Tennis Falls to La Salle, 4-3

Bronx, N.Y. - The Fordham University men's tennis squad hosted La Salle on the Hawthorn/Rooney Courts on Saturday, with the Rams winning three singles matches but coming up short in the team competition, falling to the Explorers, 4-3. Austin Shoup, Alex DeRienzo and John Thornhill were victorious for the Rams at the fourth through sixth singles position, respectively. Shoup won at fourth singles over Bill Nason in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-4, as did Thornhill at sixth singles over Rob Knaster, 6-3 and 602. At fifth singles, DeRienzo won the first set over Trevor Donovan, 6-1, but dropped the second by a 6-3 score. But DeRienzo came back to win the tiebreaker, 10-4. The Rams opened the match by dropping the doubles point, losing two of the three doubles matches. Shoup and Thornhill won at third doubles over Chris Harvey and Knaster, 8-6. The Rams almost took the doubles point as Dallas Harting and Brandon Abbatiello went to a tiebreaker at first doubles, falling 7-1 in the tiebreaker to drop the match, 9-8. The Fordham men's tennis team will close out its 2009 fall schedule by hosting Saint Peter's college on Sunday, October 18th at 11:00 a.m. on the Hawthorn/Rooney Courts. La Salle at Fordham
