Chris Gaston Powers Men's Basketball Past La Salle, 67-62
Maybe it was the presence of the New York Giants' Lombardi Trophy in the Rose Hill Gym today. For like the football Giants, the Fordham University men's basketball team is in need of a late season surge in order to qualify for the playoffs. And the Rams took the first step today, defeating La Salle, 67-62, in an Atlantic 10 matchup.

Fordham enters the game with a 6-17 record, 2-6 in the Atlantic 10, after a 90-73 Atlantic 10 loss to Saint Louis last Wednesday in the Rose Hill Gym. La Salle enters the contest with a 15-6 overall record, 5-3 in the conference, and is coming off an 80-71 conference win at George Washington last Saturday.

On the court, Fordham is led by junior Branden Frazier, who leads the team and is eighth in the Atlantic 10 in scoring (15.7 ppg) and also leads the squad and is second in the conference in assists (5.3/game). He became the 35th player in Fordham history to score 1,000 career points in the Saint Louis game on Wednesday. Freshman guard Mandell Thomas, the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week, is averaging 18.0 ppg over the past four games and 13.6 ppg in Atlantic 10 games, after netting a season-high 22 points against Saint Louis. He is shooting 50.0% (7-14) from behind the arc over the last four games.

Saturday afternoon's contest will be the 46th meeting between Fordham and La Salle on the hardwood with the Explorers leading the all-time series, which started in the 1953-54 season, 32-13. The Rams won last year's matchup, 67-62, on February 25 in the Rose Hill Gym as Chris Gaston exploded for a career-high 35 points and 16 rebounds and Branden Frazier added eleven points.
