Fordham Baseball Recruit Charles Galiano Drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 2012 MLB First Year Player Draft
June 6, 2012
New York, N.Y. - The final day of the 2012 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft got underway on Wednesday with Fordham recruit Charles Galiano (Dix Hills, N.Y./Commack HS) hearing his name called in the 36th round (Pick #1118) by the Philadelphia Phillies. He is the first player with Fordham connections to be drafted by the Phillies, since Tom Capowski and Len Zandy in the very first draft in 1965. This marks the second straight year that a Fordham recruit was drafted out of high school, as Matthew Duran was taken in the fourth round by the New York Yankees last year. Overall, Galiano is the 33rd player with Fordham ties to be drafted since the inception of the draft in 1965. Last season, Duran was the first of three Fordham draft picks, along with Nick Martinez (18th Round - Texas) and Max Krakowiak (48th Round - Seattle). Galiano is a 6-0, 180-pound catcher from Dix Hills, New York, who was one of nine early signees by the Rams for next season. He was the starting catcher for the varsity baseball team at Commack High School throughout his career. Galiano was an All-County and All-League selection after an outstanding junior campaign, which saw him receive Commack's Male Athlete of the Year Award. He hit .410 with a .776 slugging percentage, an on-base percentage of .515, 13 doubles, and five home runs. In addition to those accolades, Galiano was selected to the Bobby Valentine All-American Team, the Under Armour National Baseball Team, and the Philadelphia Phillies Dominican Republic Scout Team. As a senior, Galiano just received All-League and All-County honors once again, helping Commack to the Class AA League 1 Championship. Full list of Fordham baseball draft picks (round):
