Fordham Baseball Announces Special Events Calendar for 2013
Jan. 30, 2013
Bronx, N.Y. - The Fordham baseball team has announced its special events calendar for the 2013 season, which features the Rams raising funds to support the Wounded Warrior Project and the St. Baldrick's Foundation, as well as having the annual Alumni Day and Little League Nights. April 12-14, 2013 - vs. Rhode Island After a very successful campaign last year that raised over $5,000, the Fordham baseball team will once again take part in raising funds to support the Wounded Warrior Project during Fordham's home series against Rhode Island, April 12-14, at Houlihan Park. The Rams will take pledges and sell camouflage hats during the weekend. Set up to honor and empower U.S. service members, who have been wounded in the line of duty, the Wounded Warrior Project's vision is to foster the most successful, well-adjusted generation of wounded service members in our nation's history. The Project raises awareness and enlists the public's aid for the needs of injured service members, and helps injured service members aid and assist each other by providing unique, direct programs and services to meet their needs. To support the Rams' in their effort to support the Wounded Warrior Project, information on pledging money or purchasing a hat can be found by clicking here.
April 13, 2013 - vs. Rhode Island
The 1993 team featured seven All-Patriot League selections, including four First Team members, Bill Conkling, Joe Mackey, Mike Butler, and Joe Schultz, and three Second Team selections, Henry Toolan, Jerry Geigle, and Tom Caldara. April 24, 2013 - vs. Columbia (DH) A new event for the Rams this season will take place on Wednesday, April 24th, as Fordham hosts Columbia for its annual doubleheader in one of the longest running series in college baseball history. Members of both squads will be taking part in "St. Baldrick's Day," as players will shave their heads in support of the St. Baldrick's Foundation, becoming "basebald" players. St. Baldrick's is an organization that raises money for children's cancer research. More children are lost to cancer in the U.S. than any other disease and more than many other childhood diseases combined. To support Fordham baseball in this cause, donations can be made on the St. Baldrick's Fordham Baseball page by clicking here.
April 20, 2013 - vs. George Washington
In addition to the barbeque celebration, loyal supporter of Fordham Baseball Jim Houlihan has purchased and will unveil eight plaques of distinction, which honor eight special Fordham Rams. The honorees will include five individuals that have been recognized by the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, Frankie Frisch (player), Ed "Doc" Walsh (player), Vin Scully (broadcaster), John Kieran (writer), and Walter O'Malley (owner), and the two ABCA Hall of Fame coaches that have coached at Fordham (Jack Coffey and Dan Gallagher). Esteban Bellan will be the final Ram to be honored, as the first Latin American to play professional baseball in the United States and one of the pioneers, who introduced baseball to Cuba in the 1870's.
