Wells' Big Day Powers Softball to Sunday Split with George Mason

Sophomore Backstop Blasts Two Homers, Drives in Five, Reaches Safely Five Times

Bronx, N.Y. – Sophomore Sydney Wells had one of her best days as a Fordham Ram as softball split Sunday's doubleheader with George Mason, rallying for a 6-5 win in game one but falling, 3-1, in game two, giving the Patriots the series victory. With the day's results, the Rams move to 11-17 overall and 3-3 in league play, while Mason moves to 19-14 and 5-3, respectively.

Wells finished the day 4-for-6 at the dish with two home runs and five RBIs, powering the Rams to victory in game one with her first multi-home run effort, including a grand slam. In game two, the Selah, Wash. native had two of the offense's three hits, both singles, and was hit by a pitch.

Mason struck several times in the opening four frames of game one against starter Bailey Enoch, plating one in each of the first two and two in the fourth. Wells hit her first round-tripper, a solo shot to deep right, with one out in the fourth and then stepped up with two outs and the bases loaded in the fifth and blasted her second to left centerfield. The offense rallied hard in the inning; Sarah Taffet had reached to open the frame on a dropped pop-up and after two straight outs, Neleh Nogay began the rally with a single to center and Enoch walked, paving the way for Wells' heroics.

The lead was short-lived as Ellie DeRosa's sac fly knotted the game up in the next half-inning, but the tie was also not for long as Fordham went ahead for good through Nogay's single through the right side with one out in the sixth, driving in Taffet, who had led off with a single up the middle. Holly Beeman earned her fifth victory in relief, allowing the tying run but otherwise holding the Patriots at bay, including a 1-2-3 seventh capped by a strikeout.

Fordham scored first in game two, breaking an early deadlock with an Enoch sac fly, scoring Michaela Carter. The Patriots finally got to Beeman in the fifth with a one-out Zoe Vozick RBI single, scoring DeRosa, who led off with a double, and then a two-out sharply-hit infield single to Juia Martine off the bat of Mar Bozek. The visitors later added an insurance run on a two-out Maddy Myers double off the left field wall.

Beeman suffered the loss with just two earned runs allowed over seven innings, striking out five. Nicki Sudall, pinch-hitting in the seventh, provided the offense's third knock of the game. Carter and Nogay each notched two hits in game one and Enoch walked three times total on the day.

Fordham returns to action this Wednesday afternoon against Hofstra at 3 p.m. at Bahoshy Field. MSG Networks and ESPN+ will have live coverage.
