Bronx, N.Y. – Fordham softball split Wednesday's doubleheader with Drexel, winning game one, 3-1, but falling in game two, 9-1. With the results, the Rams move to 10-15 overall, while the Dragons move to 6-16.
Devon Miller led Fordham to victory in the opening contest, going the distance and allowing just one run with three strikeouts. The Rams busted loose for three runs in the third inning against reliever Holly Spletzer, the first scoring on an error by the pitcher as she tried to field a
Julia Martine, allowing pince runner
Mallory McClellan to score.
Sydney Wells then drove in Martine and
Michaela Carter with a booming double down the left field line. Drexel scored its run on a sac fly in the fifth.
The trio of Carter,
Neleh Nogay, and Miller all tallied two hits. Martine stole a pair of bases, Carter and Nogay one each.
After a pair of quick, scoreless frames in game two, the Dragons got to starter
Holly Beeman for two runs in the third and scored in each frame the rest of the way. Due to four errors in the field and a couple of passed balls, only five of the runs were earned against Beeman and
Bailey Enoch. Fordham's run came on a Martine RBI single to score
Bella Ayala, who had doubled to shallow right.
Kate McGuire produced two singles in three trips to the plate, to go with a couple of outstanding plays in the field, though no other Ram reached more than once.
The Rams are back in action this weekend for a three-game series against George Mason at home. Saturday's doubleheader and Sunday's series finale will both begin at noon. Saturday's contests will be streamed on MSG Networks, while all three will be on ESPN+, as well.
