Elon, N.C. – Fordham softball fell, 3-1, to Elon in the opening game of their Phoenix Invitational on Friday afternoon. The Rams fall to 1-5 overall as a result.
Fordham's morning game against Saint Francis was cancelled due to inclement weather, also resulting in the afternoon game being ultimately pushed back two hours. Through the first four frames,
Devon Miller was locked in a pitcher's duel with Elon's McKenna McCard, the latter holding the Rams to just one walk. In the fifth, Fordham struck first through
Mary Grace O'Neill, pinch-hitting, driving in
Kate McGuire, pinch-running for
Bella Ayala, who was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, with a single to right. The Phoenix struck back in the bottom of the inning, however, plating two runs on a solo home run and then a triple and single. Elon tacked on a third run in the sixth after a single, steal, sac bunt, and fielding error.
O'Neill finished 2-for-2 with a pair of singles off the bench and
Julia Petrovich provided the rest of the offense with a single and a double.
Neleh Nogay,
Michaela Carter, and
Bailey Enoch all drew walks. Miller was saddled with her third loss, allowing two runs with four strikeouts. Reigning A-10 Pitcher of the Week
Holly Beeman allowed the go-ahead inherited run to score and herself gave up an unearned run over 1.1 innings with two strikeouts.
The Rams take on Michigan State at 9:30 a.m. and James Madison at 2:30 p.m. tomorrow.
