Joseph Chartouny Named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year

Ryan Rhoomes named Third Team All-Conference; Christian Sengfelder to All-Academic team

Bronx, N.Y. – Fordham University freshman guard Joseph Chartouny was named the 2016 Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year and to the All-Rookie Team it was announced today by the conference office. Additionally, senior forward Ryan Rhoomes was named Third Team All-Atlantic 10 and sophomore forward Christian Sengfelder was named to the All-Academic team. The league announced its award Tuesday in advance of the 2016 Men's Basketball Championship, which begins Wednesday at Barclays Center.
 
The major awards, the 15-member All-Conference teams, All-Defensive and All-Rookie teams were all nominated and voted by the conference's 14 head coaches. The basketball communications directors select the All-Academic team.
 
Chartouny becomes the fifth Ram to earn Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year honors, joining Bevon Robin (1998), Bryant Dunston (2005), Chris Gaston (2010) and Eric Paschal (2015). He was named A-10 Rookie of the Week a school-record seven times this winter.
 
On the year, Chartouny is averaging 11.0 ppg, 5.5 rpg and 6.2 assists/game. He leads the Atlantic 10, and is 21st in the NCAA, in assists/game while he also ranks second in the conference in steals/game (2.1) and fifth in assist/turnover ratio (2.3). His 148 assists on the season is a Fordham freshman record while his 6.2 apg average leads all NCAA Division I freshmen.
 
Rhoomes, the lone Ram to start every game in 2015-2016, is averaging 14.6 ppg and 9.4 rpg, both team highs, while recording eleven double-doubles, including five in the past six games. He also leads the team in field goal percentage (.649) and blocks (50). Rhoomes leads the Atlantic 10 and is seventh in the NCAA Division I in field goal percentage while ranking second in the conference, and 39th in the nation, in rebounding.
 
Over his career, Rhoomes has pulled down 907 career rebounds, good for seventh on the Fordham all-time list, while his 139 career blocks is fifth all-time at Rose Hill.
 
Sengfelder, a Biology major, is averaging 10.2 ppg, fourth on the team, and 5.2 rpg, third on the squad. He has connected on 46 three-pointers, second best among all Rams this year, and his three-point field goal shooting percentage of .390 (46-118) is 15th in the Atlantic 10. Sengfelder, a member of the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie team last year, also has 28 assists, 20 steals and eight blocks in 2015-2016.
 
Fordham, who finished the regular season with a 17-12 overall record, 8-10 in the Atlantic 10, opens play at the 2016 Atlantic 10 Championship on Thursday as the eighth-seeded Rams face the ninth-seeded Richmond Spiders at Noon in the Barclays Center on the NBC Sports Network. The 17 wins and eight conference wins are the most for the Rams since the 2006-2007 season.
