Robert Hassmiller was a member of the Fordham men's basketball team's "Wonder Five" group in the 1930s.

The Maroon of 1937 describes the "Wonder Five" accomplishments as follows:

"In direct contrast to their brothers of the gridiron, the court contingent of Coach Vinnie Cavanaugh got off to a dismal start , dropping three games of their first isx.  But, the Fordham cagers came back to win ten straight in the latter part of the season, finishing with a 13-3 record and a well-rounded claim to the mythical city championship.  Included in an imposing array of conquered opponents were three archrivals of the Metropolitan area, CCNY, NYU, and Manhattan, who bit the dust in three successive weekends at the season's close, a period during which the Ram courtmen scaled peaks not attained since the day of the late 1920s.

While not an impressive aggregation physically, James Drury and his teammates made up for their lack of girth with speed, stamina, and coolness under fire.  The end of the season found Richard Davis, captain-elect for the 1937-38 team, and Robert Hassmiller, the varsity's only sophomore regular, prominently mentioned by "All-City" selectors.  The team's effectiveness, however, lay in its superb coordination of effort.  The Rams used a slow-breaking offense, passing the ball about in leisurely fashion until Davis or Drury broke through for a lay-up of John Daley or Edward Kamen could throw up a set shot.  Hassmiller, the quintet's chief feeder, was nevertheless its seconds highest scorer."
